Dear Editor,

I strongly disagree with the claim that charities are robust enough to withstand the effects of the economic downturn (Third Sector Online, 15 July).

This claim is based on research that is heavily biased towards larger charities, which are better resourced.

The weakening economy has left most charities in a vulnerable position as they struggle to meet escalating costs and reduced income. In many cases, the loss of voluntary donations will be instant, as cash-strapped donors limit their spending to essentials and hold off making donations until a more settled climate returns. Other sources of income will also disappear more quickly than the research suggests, as businesses reduce costs they consider inessential.

The challenge is threefold: charities must search for new sources of income; they must find realistic means of reducing overheads; and they must constantly monitor their finances to ensure a balanced cash flow.
