Self-employed (or LLP) versus Limited Company
Many of those in the medical profession often ask us if it is more tax efficient to be in business via a Limited Company or be self-employed (or a LLP – Limited Liability Partnership). As with so many questions, the answer is “it all depends”!
People often think that using a Limited Company is preferable from a tax point of view. Please view our self-employed (or LLP) versus Limited company chart, which sets out tax rates for different profit levels. This chart shows this is not the case for higher profits.
Before the advent of LLP’s, many people traded via Limited Companies for the liability protection offered by them. However, even though the introduction of LLP’s offer similar protection, many individuals still prefer to trade as self employed without the label of an LLP for numerous reasons e.g. so as not to have financial details on public record.
However, as mentioned in the first paragraph, the trading vehicle to use is dependent on numerous circumstances and tax payable may be only one of numerous factors to consider.
